49 - Old Oak Doors Part B
[LISTEN]
bolding as they are written
I. We have a revolution against StrexCorp who bought our radio station and most of Night Vale, but who have also tried to destroy our way of life by making us all work hard and worship a smiling god and be happy even when we have no reason to be happy.
II. FOW and Hiram call in from City Hall to remind him that it’s also election day. Oh yeah, it’s also election day. Votes still coming in even though they don't matter because of Hidden Gorge. So we’ll keep an eye on that too I guess, but the revolution is the main thing. I mean, sorry you two. Your thing’s very important too.
III. (Jason can’t make it, so nothing here)
IV. Cecil reports that doors have been opening all over town, and things claiming to be angels, which are not real, and a giant army have been coming through, but Strexcorp is keeping them at bay with an equal force of helicopters and smiling, blood covered people. We have not yet seen Dana yet, but I am sure she will come through soon. The creatures with the long arms and faces and beautiful feathered wings and who are certainly not angels stormed StrexCorp headquarters to rescue the book-loving leader of Night Vale's revolution, thirteen year old Tamika Flynn. But she was not there. They found broken shackles and the words "I AM FOUND" written in green marker on a dry erase board.
V. It’s time for a word from our sponsors. I didn’t even think we were doing that what with all the revolution that’s happening, but here’s Deb the Sentient Patch of Haze with a message from some company, and she won’t go away until she does it
Deb
exit Deb
VI. Signal interruption: Lauren & Kevin are broadcasting from a secret place. Listen, let’s just try to work things out. I mean, if we can’t figure something out we’ll just have to crush you completely. Up to you! All through all of these plots bits, there should be hints of an escalating battle that’s taking over the town. L & K hear someone in their studio
Tamika enters. Who is this? Just a girl who likes books, bitch (or you know some cheer-able phrase).
Lauren tells Kevin that she’ll deal with this. Confrontation between Lauren and Tamika. Tamika wins and Lauren and Kevin flee.
Tamika promises to keep broadcasting instructions to Night Vale from this secret location.
exit Tamika
VII. Still no word from Dana listeners. More hints about the larger struggle in town. Starting to get worried that she may not make it back to this time and space.
Dana appears.
Cecil asks why she has not come back into town yet. She's almost there. She's having to deal with something here in the desert (it's the great rumbling. it is getting closer and the sun is growing so bright here. Might be worse than Strex) Plus I found someone.
Carlos appears.
Carlos? I haven't seen you in weeks? What has happened to you?
Carlos/Cecil reunion moment
Carlos found Dana in the desert. He's helping Dana figure out how to open doors without letting light through. Carlos has rigged up a temporary system to keep the harmful desert light out of night Vale so he can let Dana through. Unraveling of the universe.
Dana and Carlos talk a bit about the other world and their respective lives. Have a moment.
No worries though, Carlos will be back in Night Vale in just an hour or two. He just needs to figure some stuff out first.
exit Dana and Carlos
VIII. Cecil tells everyone despite the unraveling of the universe, election day is still going well. Let's go back out to City Hall.
Hiram and FOW both talk about how weird things are about how things are becoming translucent and how there are a few yellow helicopters starting to hover near the open doors, and maybe some of these "angels" should shut the doors were they born in a barn?
Revolutions are cool, but elections are cooler. Some bickering over who should be mayor.
exit Hiram and FOW
IX. The doors are open and the army is coming through and helping, and Dana has come through too, but we’re hearing and feeling a deep rumbling. The sun is glowing, growing brighter. Not sure what that means.
Door in station opens. John Peters and Maureen enter. They both made it back through
John explains that while in the desert he and Maureen saw the thing that rumbles. It is a smiling god. The universe is unraveling.
How'd you know all that. I was in my high school 4H club. It's pretty basic stuff Cecil.
Cecil tells Maureen it's nice to see her again. She chews him out for letting her drink that orange juice. And that he has the worst internship program ever.
Long pause. Intern Jeremy was eaten my scorpions in the break room. I'd love to have you back at the station, Maureen. That'd be cool. Maureen is not happy with how we’re leaving things here.
exit John & Maureen
X. The rumbling in growing louder still. And the sun is very very bright. There’s very little shadow or darkness left in Night Vale. What is Night Vale without darkness? Some people are reporting that they have forgotten important relatives and names of birds. Some are saying they can see through their skin. Carlos’s rigging to keep out the light is failing. I wish I could reach Carlos. The unraveling of the universe.
A knock at the station door. Carlos is back?
It's Steve. He has seen a LOT of stuff today, and he recounts it, imitating a lot of voices.
Cecil is annoyed at him trying to report news on the radio. That’s my job, STEVE.
XI. Kevin enters. Lauren was last seen chased out of town by Tamika. I’m afraid she’s probably already back in Desert Bluffs, unable to help sort out all this trouble here. All these people and angels and strange giant warriors fighting and dying for no reason. The picnic area is a complete mess! Fortunately a lot Night Vale is still just watching the Angels, so Strex has the situation still under control.
Kevin talks about what Night Vale could be if it just gave in and embraced the smiling god, and let it through the doors.
This should be creepy, and be him indirectly describing the history of Desert Bluffs.
He opens up the portal to Desert Bluffs and more people from Desert Bluffs start to come through it. It’s time for Night Vale to join the rest of the world.
Steve, truthseeker that he is, has some questions for Kevin about all this. Cecil is annoyed about that.
But Steve, having heard Kevin out and asked questions, comes to the conclusion that Night Vale does not need this. I like the thing about Janice being in a wheelchair and Kevin wanting to “fix” her, and this being the tipping point for him, but instead of coming from initially sympathetic, he just comes from neutral and willing to listen. And ultimately he stands with Night Vale.
He and Cecil join up to drive Kevin away through the portal and close it. A moment of understanding between the two of them that they both love Night Vale, and they both love Janice.. But, ugh it’s Steve. So get out of here Steve.
exit Steve
XII. Dana arrives, physically there for the first time since she left last year. She wants to tell the people of Night Vale that whatever that thing in the desert is, it’s bleeding through and that we must all seek shelter while the angels and desert army block out whatever it is trying to get through. Let these powerful beings do their thing.
Tamika breaks into the signal. She says the same thing Dana is saying but that people should all rally to the doors and keep whatever out. We must all fight together, not hide and wait for others to do our work for us. Angels aren't even real.
Dana counters that angels are real and that it is not safe out there.
The two of them give contradictory speeches to Night Vale.
Cecil points out that it is hard to see anything. Everything seems to be coming unhinged.
He hates to disagree with Dana, but Tamika is right. We didn’t stand together last time and look what happened. A company picnic. And we hate picnics.
Gives a personal plea, talking about his time being censored and all the things that have happened. Again allowing us to work in some bit people and things from the last two years.
We won’t get a second chance. Either Night Vale stands for what it believes in: secrecy, lies, darkness, a world government, lights in the skies, and most of all community, or Night Vale won’t exist anymore.
Good fight, Night Vale. Good fight.

XIII. Carlos center stage (different lighting I think). Voice mail to Cecil.
Carlos figured it out. Every time we open the door, we let more of it through. And the army doesn't belong in NV, so the doors cannot shut until they come back.
Dana and John Peters and Maureen are all safe to stay because they're from Night Vale. I'm not. People from Night Vale can never leave Night Vale - or not for long. This is a strange scientific property I have learned about your town. It is the most scientifically interesting town in America.
I got the army to return through the doors.
So I don't want you to worry or think I'm trying to be a hero, but I've managed to close the doors between these worlds. It means I’m stuck here with the army and the smiling god, but at least Night Vale is safe.
I'll find a way back some day. But hey, Dana's right, cell phone batteries never die here, and you get pretty good reception, so we'll still be able to talk on the phone every night. We'll still be there for each other. Just not there there.
exit Carlos
XIV. Cecil(back to normal lighting) Listeners, Night Vale was successful. Everyone rose up. Again, some incorporating of minor characters and bits from the last two years in the narrative of the battle. Anyway, the army went home and the doors have disappeared. I think, finally, we are ourselves. We are Night Vale again.
We have learned that Old Woman Josie and her supposed angel friends, held off StrexCorp's construction team at the old lot where she plans to rebuild Night Vale's Old Opera House. The construction team was picked up by Josie's winged friends who claim to be angels and flown far into the sky, past the clouds which are also not real.
One of Josie's angel-like friends, who wore a double-breasted Italian custom suit then wrote a check to purchase Strex Corp. While they were not technically for sale, there was no one to decline the offer, so according to American business law that's pretty much an acquisition.
We also learned that a group of teenagers lead by Tamika Flynn chased out everyone at StrexCorp headquarters by slingshotting copies of Steven Covey's bestselling self-help book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People at them.
Haven’t seen Carlos around but he’ll be fine. A scientist is always fine.
Even here at the station, the office of station management, which has read Lauren Mallard, Vice President, Strex Corp, for the past many months, now has no sign and is just a stone slab covering a dark cave, a pulsing red glow around its edges, a deep shout of white noise cracking apart my ears and filling my mind with dread, such terribly sad and monstrous visions, when I walk past that door. So it seems like our old management bought the station back. That's great news? Wait, are we any safer now?
XV.
Hiram and FOW enter. But what about the election? You know, the event today that actually matters?
Oh and I almost forgot, we had an election today. I'm getting word that not all of the votes are in but it doesn't matter (ha! votes!), hidden gorge has spoken through its pulses and we have a new mayor.
Who won? Neither. Neither? It chose someone named Dana.
FOW: She's just an intern. Hiram: She's just a human. FOW: And actually, didn't she murder her doppelganger? Can we have a murderer as mayor. Hiram: WEll, um, I don't think killing a person should necessarily disqualify you. BUT... how do we know her double didn't kill her and take her place.
FOW: Yeah! You know what. I'm still running for mayor. Hiram: This is bullshit. Me too.
Well, Dana. You were important all along. Or your double. I'm just happy you're home safe. Our time and space matches once again that is all that matters.
Exit the newly scheming Hiram and FOW.
XVI.
Finally Cecil alone. We are back to the beginning, just Cecil and us. We have won, but the universe is still unraveling. It just is. That is what it does, and nothing we did was going to change that. Let’s live as best we can in this unraveling universe.
Oh! Listeners, there's a voice mail. From Carlos. He must have called during the weather. I need to check this. Stay tuned next and Good night NV Good night.
